Natural and precipitated barium sulphate can both be used in coatings, plastics, rubber and related products, but their production routes and grade characteristics are different. The right choice depends on the formulation and target performance.

Barium sulphate is widely used as a mineral or functional filler in coatings, plastics, rubber, adhesives, inks and other industrial systems. Two common product categories are natural barium sulphate and precipitated barium sulphate.

Natural barium sulphate is obtained from barite through physical processing such as crushing, grinding and classification. Different natural grades can vary in BaSO4 content, whiteness, particle size, density and oil absorption. They are often considered when density, mineral-filler performance, cost and a suitable particle-size range are important to the formulation.

Precipitated barium sulphate is produced through a controlled chemical reaction. It is generally selected when the application requires finer and more controlled particle characteristics, higher purity or higher whiteness. In suitable formulations it can be used in powder coatings, industrial paints, plastics, rubber, inks, adhesives and specialised filler applications.

The choice should not be based on the product name alone. Important selection factors include the resin or polymer system, gloss target, colour and whiteness requirements, particle-size distribution, oil absorption, dispersion, processing equipment and final performance tests. A natural grade that works well in one coating may not provide the same result in another resin system, while a precipitated grade may require different dispersion conditions or formulation adjustments.

For an effective enquiry, provide the application, current filler, target performance, key specification limits, estimated addition level and test method. Final selection should be confirmed by sample evaluation and the current grade-specific technical documents.
